Abstract. The article provides an overview of the activities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), tracing the history of its establishment and role in promoting peace and universal human values. It examines key programmes in education, science, and cultural and natural heritage protection. Special attention is given to Ukraine’s contribution, including numerous initiatives launched at Ukraine’s proposal, which have been incorporated into UNESCO’s programmes and strategic areas of activities. Ukraine has integrated international standards into national legislation and public policy. Currently, seven Ukrainian cultural sites and one natural site are inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The article highlights UNESCO’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. In the context of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, UNESCO’s role has acquired a new and unprecedented dimension. The organisation has been monitoring the situation in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, providing emergency assistance, protecting cultural heritage and supporting the education system. This marks UNESCO’s first experience of operating during an active international armed conflict in Europe, demonstrating its flexibility and adaptability to contemporary challenges.
The study underscores the importance of partnership for a shared future, reflecting the enduring mutual value of cooperation between Ukraine and UNESCO. In these challenging times of war and global crises, such cooperation is more relevant than ever. As a member of UNESCO, Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to actively contributing to the common goal of building peace through education, culture, and science.
